Saudi Gold Refinery Eyes Major Mining Investment in Tanzania

Tanzania’s mining sector could attract another major international investor after Saudi Gold Refinery expressed interest in undertaking mineral exploration and potentially developing large-scale mining operations in the country.

The investment interest was discussed in Dodoma on 21 August 2026 during a meeting between Tanzania’s Minister for Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, and Saudi Gold Refinery Vice Chairman Faisal Alothaim.

According to information released following the meeting, the company intends to begin with detailed mineral exploration before considering large-scale mining activities in accordance with Tanzania’s laws and regulatory requirements.

Alothaim described Tanzania as an attractive investment destination due to its favourable business environment and significant mineral potential. Discussions between the two sides focused on available investment opportunities and prospects for stronger cooperation between Tanzania and Saudi Arabia in the mining sector.

The engagement follows the Tanzania–Saudi Arabia Business Forum, which helped create new channels for trade and investment cooperation between the two countries.

A Strategic Opportunity for Tanzania

Saudi Gold Refinery’s interest is an encouraging signal for Tanzania’s efforts to attract international capital into mineral exploration and mining development.

However, the long-term value of such an investment should be measured not only by the amount of capital committed or minerals extracted, but also by the wider economic benefits created within Tanzania.

A successful investment could support:

• Expanded and more detailed mineral exploration
• Creation of direct and indirect employment
• Transfer of mining knowledge and technology
• Increased demand for Tanzanian goods and services
• Growth of local mining suppliers and contractors
• Higher exports and government revenue
• Further development of mineral processing and refining capacity

Detailed exploration is particularly important because it helps establish the location, size, quality and commercial viability of mineral deposits before large investments are committed.

From Extraction to Value Addition

Tanzania possesses diverse mineral resources, including gold, diamonds, tanzanite, nickel, graphite, coal and several minerals required by modern industries.

To achieve greater economic returns, the country’s mining strategy must continue moving beyond extraction and raw mineral exports towards processing, refining and other forms of value addition.

If Saudi Gold Refinery proceeds with its plans, Tanzania has an opportunity to encourage an investment model that connects mining operations with domestic processing, employment, professional training and participation of local businesses.

Local value addition can allow Tanzania to retain a larger share of the economic benefits generated by its minerals while building industrial capabilities that remain in the country over the long term.

Opportunities for Tanzanian Businesses

Major mining investments create opportunities beyond the mine itself. Tanzanian companies can participate in construction, transport, security, engineering, equipment maintenance, environmental services, catering, accommodation, professional consulting and technology.

For these opportunities to reach local businesses, potential investors and public institutions must establish clear local-content arrangements from the early stages of exploration and project planning.

Training programmes and partnerships with universities, technical colleges and mining institutions could also prepare Tanzanians for specialised roles within future mining operations.

Responsible Investment Remains Essential

Any proposed investment will need to comply with Tanzania’s mining, environmental, labour and local-content requirements.

Responsible exploration and mining should protect communities and the environment while ensuring fair compensation, transparent engagement and measurable economic benefits.

The government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a favourable environment for investors while ensuring that mining activities comply with national laws and contribute to Tanzania’s development.

What Comes Next?

At this stage, the announcement represents investment interest rather than confirmation of an operational mining project.

Important next steps may include identifying exploration areas, conducting geological studies, securing the necessary licences, completing environmental assessments and developing a detailed investment plan.

The progress of these activities will determine whether the discussions eventually lead to a large-scale mining investment.

Nevertheless, the interest shown by Saudi Gold Refinery strengthens Tanzania’s position as a destination for international mining investment. The greater opportunity is to ensure that future projects translate the country’s mineral wealth into jobs, technology, local enterprise development and sustainable economic growth.
